Favorite Songs

I went back to a full-time cubefarm job where I sit in front of a computer looking at numbers and listening to the radio.  It's funny, because as I alternate between NPR and conservative talk radio, I think of a million things to blog about.  Then, by the time I get home, I'm so mentally exhausted from the political chatter in my head that I just sprawl across my bed and watch Ally McBeal or Jersey Shore (I KNOW) for the next three hours, instead.  Sometimes the political chatter is too much to bear after a while, and I just get burned out, and listen to music instead for a few days.  This is when I acquaint myself with the latest pop songs that are on the radio, and reacquaint myself with my tiny mp3 library.  As a result, I have some current favorites from each:

So catchy I can't stop listening to it:

Danny'll hate me for this one:

So poignant:

The band's name is highly accurate:

I hated it because it was so depressing, but ended up loving it, anyway:

I always love me a good revenge song:

A good one to listen to at work if you're interested in desiring to throw expensive office equipment through skyscraper windows:

Fucking hilarious lyrics:

I love Andy Partridge's voice:

Within the next several hours, expect an impassioned and urgent-sounding post about #OccupyWallStreet.

Video of the Day - Happy birthday to my husband!

That's right, folks, it is the 31st anniversary of my darling husband's birth.  That makes him a Gemini, and if you were wondering, he is definitely a Gemini.  Among my husband's many talents (many talents being something Geminis are also known for) is that he can play any instrument you hand him after a few seconds of simply looking at it first, and he's got a beautiful voice.  So, in honor of his birthday, I will dedicate today's Video of the Day to him, with a recording of a performance during which he covered Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time."  Back before we were married, or even dating, I used to watch this like, 10 times a day.

Why ya gotta be so mean?

I'm not usually such a fan of poppy, generic songs with cheesy lyrics, but we all have our exceptions.  "Mean" is one of mine.

It's no secret that I've always loved country music, whether or not I'm in a critical mood, so I suppose it's no surprise that one of my guilty pleasure faves would be Taylor Swift.  But I just can't help it-- the lyrics to this song, while a little expectedly juvenile and bland, make me feel happy, in a very "take THAT, asshole!" sort of way.

I think I like it so much because I just know people like that.  Mean people, that is.  People who pick on other people for the sole purpose of just picking on them.  Tearing people down, being overly critical.  I fucking hate mean people.  So I love this song, and it's stuck in my head all the time.  Enjoy.

Bonus question: how do you feel about the implications of Taylor Swift's songwriting style and image, as it relates to gender-based stereotypes and equality?

Lyrics under the fold.
